Design Review Checklist for Mechanical Engineers: 25 Checks Before Drawing Release

A mechanical design review checklist helps catch drawing and product-development errors before they reach manufacturing. A short, repeatable review process can prevent expensive rework.

1. Geometry and dimensions

  • Are all functional dimensions defined?
  • Are dimensions readable and non-duplicated?
  • Are critical interfaces checked?
  • Are holes, slots and features located correctly?

2. Tolerances

  • Are tolerances functional rather than unnecessarily tight?
  • Are fits and mating conditions correct?
  • Has tolerance stack-up been reviewed?

3. Material and finish

  • Is material grade clearly specified?
  • Are heat treatment or coating requirements included?
  • Are surface finish requirements appropriate?

4. Manufacturing

  • Can the selected manufacturing process make the part?
  • Is tool access adequate?
  • Are bend radii and reliefs practical?
  • Are welds and fabrication details clear?

5. Assembly

  • Can the components be assembled in the intended sequence?
  • Are fasteners accessible?
  • Are interference and clearance conditions checked?

6. Documentation

  • Drawing number and revision correct?
  • BOM quantities correct?
  • Part numbers consistent?
  • Units and general tolerances correct?
  • Required notes and standards included?

7. Engineering validation

Where required, review strength, deformation, fatigue, buckling, thermal effects and FEA results. Important calculations should be traceable and based on realistic loading.

Release discipline

Use a formal review and approval process for production drawings. When changes occur, update the revision, BOM and related documents together.

This mechanical design review checklist can become a standard gate before every drawing release and is especially useful for busy engineering teams handling multiple projects.
